TEMPLE HISTORY

" தென்னாடுடைய சிவனே போற்றி , என்னாட்டவர்க்கும் இறைவா போற்றி ", just like this old saying all villages in tirunelveli (oxford of tamilnadu) have their own special Lord Shiva temple.

One of those historical temple lies in Harikesavanallur,(2km from Viravanallur).
Here lies Lord Periyanayagi @ Pragannayagi and Lord Ariyanathar.

From history we came to know that Ninraseer nedumaran, a pandiyan king built this temple. He was also called as Arikesavan. The temple was built around 1000 years ago.
Other names of the temple are listed below:
  • Arikesavamudayar.
  • Arikesanarudaya naayanmaar.
  • Mullinaatu raja raja sathurvedimangalam. (Mangalam means Vedas have been taught there).

It’s a worry that the temple which has a lots of historical importance and invaluable inscriptions has not seen a kumbabishegam in a huge period. Anyways we are here to join our hands to start the proceedings.

Lets take a journey to this temple,

The entrance has a big mandapam, followed by palipeedam, kodimaram, restplace of nandidevar, crossing that brings you to the wide gangway for temple car and the three inner praharam.
Totally there are two rest places. Lord ariyanathar lies with his bodyguards in one of the rest place and kuberanathar lies in the figure of lingam in another one. Hence this two came to be called as Athi Ariyanathar.
Goind further inside shows us the beautiful
  •  Lord Vinayagar
  •  Juradevar
  •  Saptha kanniyar
  •  Lord Subramaniyan along with Valli & Deivanai
  •  Sanibhagavan
  •  Chandikesvarar and
  •  Kasi vishalakshi sametha kasi vishwanatha swami sannathigal.

Lord Dhakshinamoorthy in this temple is one of the five guru tsalangal. The other four are in thiruvidaimaruthur, attalanallur, thenthirubhuvanam, idaikkaal. In our temple, Lord Dhakshinamoorthy poses like blessing his devotee with his left hand and right hand with a small sign in it.

Outside there are kuberan, jeshtadevi, bairavar, mukkuruni vinayagar, Kasi vishalakshi sametha kasi vishwanathar, lord murugan along with valli & deivanai and the navagrahangal.

Lord jeshtadevi in this temple is believed to cure the maanthi
(sevvaai thosham). Recently, hundreds of families visited our
temple to do the respective poojas. Ambal, lies in the 3rd praharam
which seems to be a separate temple. The temple pond have to be
cleaned to bring it back to the lovely views of its early days.
Manivaasagaperumaan's mandapam which is used to celebrate
functions also has to be reconstructed.
Temple's kumbhabishegam was last held in Revathi natchathram.
A great astrologist said that revathi natchathira devotees can get a
good time by involving in this time's kumbhabishegam.

Temple's thala virusham- Nelli maram (நெல்லி மரம் ) is located
behind the swami sannathi.

Above image dispalys the information about the temple given by
Archaeological scientists from the inscriptions.
